Fueling excellence: The data-driven champions of Waste-to-Energy performance

The work at Keppel Seghers doesn’t stop at the final acceptance of a construction project. Once a Waste-to-Energy project is commissioned, the Asset Optimisation team gradually takes over from the project team for the support to customers.
The team focuses on:
  • Plant performance: We advise our customers concerning the combustion process and mechanical equipment on how to keep the plant at a high-performance level. Such advice is given for not only the furnace and boiler but also the flue gas cleaning and steam condensate systems
  • Plant profitability: We support our customers with cost-efficient upgrades to maximise the plant’s profitability
  • Asset reliability: We believe that continuous monitoring and removing equipment weaknesses and bottlenecks, while operating conditions are changing, and upgrades are implemented, are key to high reliability in the long run
  • Outage inspections: To keep the grate and furnace, the heart of the plant, in optimal condition, our grate specialist comes to the site for inspection and advises our customer
  • Data analysis: To realise the above aspects, our data scientists take a deep dive into the operating data and give directions. Tools are developed in-house to reveal non-trivial insights
  • Performance reporting: We deliver every morning a report of the plant’s most important KPIs from yesterday and indicate those which need attention. This helps the operating team to early focus on items which can have a negative impact on plant performance in the near future

As the Asset Optimisation team, we are convinced that supporting our customers and building a long-term relationship not only is of high value for our customers but also contributes to the reputation of Keppel Seghers as a reliable partner and Waste-to-Energy designer; we close the circle. Experiences of wear, mechanical and process issues, weaknesses, and improvements are discussed with our process and design team. As a company, this feedback is an accelerator for the continuous improvement of the design of the next construction project.

To compare with sports: to win a medal, it is not sufficient to have a talented athlete, but he or she also needs a team of specialists to take care of other aspects like diet, material, a training schedule, and the career development plan. We, as the Asset Optimisation  team, intend to be the data-driven specialists working in the shadow to ensure that our Waste-to-Energy athlete performs and can go the next mile year after year. Statistics and AI, models, and digital twins are our tools to maximise performance while minimising the risk of injuries (material failure and unplanned shutdown).
